On Friday in Multan, Pakistan will play Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup. The following day, in Pallekele, which will also host the India-Pakistan game on September 2, Sri Lanka plays Bangladesh about 2,700 kilometres away. The Asia Cup has never been co-hosted, and for good reason too—in the 1990s and early 2000s, it hardly made sense for teams to travel across the subcontinent for a competition that only lasted 10 days. But because of shifting priorities, hosting the Asia Cup is no longer just a formality but more of a need.
